In order to stay fit and healthy, each child should make sure to participate in physical activity at least 60 minutes per day. These activities can be ones that are focused on cardiovascular endurance (swimming, biking, playing tag, walking, jogging etc), ones that focus more on muscular strength and development (push ups, curl ups etc.) Above is a great diagram of how much physical activity each child should get per day, 3-5 times a week, 2-3 times a week and what they should try to avoid as much as possible. It is important for your child's health that they find activities to do around the house, at the park, with friends and even through recreational sports in order to help them be active for life.
In Elementary Physical Education, we attempt to introduce as many physical activities to the students as possible so that they may be active for a lifetime. If they can find an activity that they enjoy participating in, they have more of a chance of being active as they grow up. As the activity pyramid is posted above, please also remember that nutrition is important to their health and development along with physical activity.
If you would like any information about more activities to do at home to stay fit, please contact one of the physical education teachers and we should be able to give you some ideas!
